Lines of Direction

 

Lines are strong visual elements, directing the attention of the gaze, creating depth and dynamic action.

However, lines can also be very distracting. For example, if they pass through a person's head, they seem to 'cut' it off like in image d. If the whole image is tilted, this effect is amplified by the strong lines, as in image e. Here it seems that the person is walking into some bad situation - or one could simply say that it would have been a better picture, had the lines been straight.
